Lunch 2006

A Great Success!

This year’s main fundraising event was a summer lunch party held on July 2nd at Guinness Park Farm Riding Centre the venue for most of our local RDA activities.

The event began at 12 noon with a sparkling wine reception on our host’s lawn, with the 100 attendees being serenaded by music provided by Hugh Field-Richards’ wind quintet of merry musicians (Pentatonic). The tents, which were put up to protect us from bad weather, served us as sun shades instead as the temperature soared into the 30s.

Our lunch, consisting of melon, salmon salad and new potatoes, strawberries and cream and rhubarb crumble was perfect for the hot weather. A big thanks to Godfrey Morgan, our volunteer chef, and his team, for a fabulous meal, cooked, prepared and served to perfection. I was very impressed, having watched “The F Word”, how everyone remained so cheerful even when the fresh salmon didn’t turn up until 10 minutes before the event started. That’s what I call fresh!

After the meal, local celebrity Phillip Serrell (as seen on the BBC’s Bargain Hunt) flew in to conduct an auction of kindly donated items. Many congratulations to the hard work put in by Elaine Benton, assisted by Angela Gibbs, to ensure that the event ran so smoothly and successfully raising a total of nearly £1800. Phillip also drew the raffle, the winning ticket receiving a wheelbarrow of booze. All that booze and transport home what more could you ask for! The raffle contributed over £200 to the amount raised.

All in all it was a successful event well worth the time and effort from the organizing committee and many other volunteers. A big thanks to everyone who helped, donated auction items and attended not least to our hosts Diana and Philip Ralph who allowed us to take over their home for the day. In total we raised nearly £3000. Well done everyone.
